Lecture: Flow and Heat Transfer Measurements

The course offers a brief description of instruments and experimental research methods, especially on fluid dynamics and convective heat transfer measurements.

The classes focus on general topics on the theory of measurement associated to the use of equipment and experimental apparatuses installed in the laboratories of “Thermal engineering and industrial energy systems” (Dept. Industrial Engineering, University of Rome “Tor Vergata”).

Instruments, such as flow meters, Pitot tube, particle image velocimetry (PIV), hot wire anemometer, thermocouples, are illustrated and their use in the laboratory allows to summarize some of the basic principles of experimental investigation.

Lectures allow to design a complete measuring chain: from the acquisition of analog data to its processing and evaluation in the domains of time and frequency, with the relative uncertainty analysis of measurements.
